Sitochroa Verticalis is a butterfly from the family of Crambidae .

features

The moths reach a wingspan of about 30 millimeters (or a forewing length of 12 to 14 mm). The front wings are whitish yellow, light ocher yellow to light brownish. The drawing consists of three darker cross lines: the roughly jagged inner cross line, the finely jagged outer cross line and the usually less sharply marked wavy line. In addition, there are often indistinctly marked ring and kidney defects. The drawing is much stronger on the underside of the forewings. The hind wings are whitish yellow and have two darker transverse lines.

The green caterpillar has a light brown colored head and black-brown pinnacula, which z. T. are lightened centrally. It grows up to 29 mm long.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area extends from Portugal in the west, across Central and Eastern Europe, Siberia ( Buryatia ) to the Russian Far East and Japan. In the north the area extends to southern Sweden, in the south to Italy.

The species prefers dry, but also slightly more humid habitats in the open landscape.

Way of life

Sitochroa verticalis forms one to two generations depending on the region. The moths fly in June and July, those of the second generation in August and September. The moths are nocturnal and come to artificial light sources. During the day they hide in the vegetation. They are easy to frighten, but then quickly look for a new hiding place. The caterpillars feed on sage germander ( Teucrium scorodonia ), scrub thistle ( Cirsium ), log ( Atriplex ), great nettle ( Urtica dioica ), black knapweed ( Centaurea nigra ), common sorrel ( Rumex acetosa ), nodding thistle ( Carduus nutans ) and narrow-leaved double seed ( Diplotaxis tenuifolia ). Pupation will probably not take place until spring.

Systematics

The taxon was first scientifically described by Carl von Linné in 1758 as Phalaena Pyralis verticalis . The species was later assigned to the genus Loxostege .
