Sitona puncticollis is a beetle from the family of weevils (Curculionidae). The beetles belong to the genus of the leaf beetles( Sitona ).
features
Sitona puncticollis is 5–6 mm long. The elytra of beetles are much wider than the pronotum . The shoulders are particularly prominent. The top of the beetle is covered with small, narrow gray scales. These are along the wing cover seam and usually lighter in the 5th space, so that the wing covers have a weak pattern of longitudinal stripes. The pronotum has narrow longitudinal bands.
distribution
The species is widespread and common in Europe. The occurrence extends in the south to North Africa, in the east to the Middle East .
Way of life
The beetles can be seen from late May to late August. The beetles feed on the leaves of their forage plants, especially at night. These belong to the family of butterflies (Faboideae) and serve as host plants for the larvae . The larvae feed on the ectophagus of the roots of their host plants, that is, unlike many other beetle larvae, they live outside the roots. The host plants include u. a. Goat clover ( Cytisus ), gorse ( Genista ), common horn clover ( Lotus corniculatus ), alfalfa ( Medicago sativa ), white sweet clover ( Melilotus albus ) as well as various types of clover ( Trifolium ) and the field bean ( Vicia faba ).
