Sitra ( Arabic سترة, DMG Sitra ) is an island in Bahrain with approx. 42,000 inhabitants. It is located south of Manama and Nabih Saleh .

The majority of the inhabitants live in the seven villages of Wadyan , Kharijiyya , Marguban , Qurayya , Mahazza , Sufala and Abul Aish .

economy

There is an industrial area in the northern part of the island. The oil reserves of the Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO) are stored in southern Sitra.

The refinery on Sitra was established in 1936 . It is the oldest active refinery in the Persian Gulf .

history

During the 2011 protests in Bahrain on March 16, 2011, more than 200 people were injured by firearms in fighting between demonstrators and government supporters.
