Sixten Bock

Karl Alfred Sixten Bock (born September 2, 1884 in Tenhult , Parish Rogberga in Småland , † August 16, 1946 ) was a Swedish marine zoologist .

biography

In 1913 he took his disputation at Uppsala University and was then a conservator at the Zoological Institute in Uppsala until 1919. In 1927 Bock became a lecturer at the general textbook in Norrköping , and after being appointed professor in 1929, he was head of the invertebrate department at the Natural History Museum in Stockholm until his death . He was elected as a member of the Science Academy in 1945.

One of Bock's merits was the introduction of physiology to the zoological department of Uppsala University. Bock was involved in several zoological expeditions, so in 1908 to Spitzbergen , 1914 to Japan and the Bonin Islands , and 1917-18 to various islands in the South Sea. He always brought home a rich collection.

On the Swedish west coast he discovered the first individuals from the hitherto unknown animal strain Xenoturbellida , which were named Xenoturbella bocki in his honor .
