Stefan (Staniša) Crnojević (also: Skanderbeg ; † 1530 ) was the last descendant of the Crnojević dynasty , which had ruled Montenegro for a century . From 1513 to 1528 he was an Ottoman Sanjak - Bey of Montenegro.

Stevan (Staniša) Crnojević was the third born of three sons of the ruler of Zeta (1465–1490), Ivan I. Crnojević . His grandfather Stefan I. Crnojević was married to Skanderbeg Kastrioti's sister Marija Kastrioti .

Stevan (Staniša) accepted Islam as a youth in Istanbul , among other things because, as a third-born son, he had little chance of assuming the throne. He got the Turkish name İskender- Bey , after Alexander the Great . Surprisingly, he was by the Ottomans 1513-1528 as Sandzak used -Bey of Montenegro. The sanjak of Montenegro was finally dissolved in the early 17th century and part of the sanjak of Shkodër .

The Montenegrins had a negative memory of Skenderbeg Crnojević: because of his exploitative tax policy, a popular uprising is said to have broken out in 1519, which the Ottomans put down. After that he is said to have ruled even more ruthlessly until his death in 1530.

According to Vuk Karadžić, there is a Montenegrin folk song in which Skenderbeg Crnojević is celebrated as the founder of the north Albanian tribe Bushati (in Montenegro Bušatlić or Bušlatović). Later, in the 17th century, some Bushatis served as viziers and military leaders in the Ottoman Empire.

In Montenegro , Albania and Serbia , an Albanian - Slavic symbiosis arose early on through inter-ethnic marriages, alternating Slavicizations and Albanianizations . Many Albanian and Montenegrin clans have traditions of a common ancestry. The Ndrekaj (Drekalović) clan of the Slavic Albanian tribe Kuqi (Kuči) maintains the tradition that they descended from Skanderbeg Kastrioti .
