Skarphéðinn Guðmundsson (born April 7, 1930 in Siglufjörður ; † January 20, 2003 in Hafnarfjörður ) was an Icelandic ski jumper .

Career

Skarphéðinn was born as the third of four children of Guðmundur Skarphéðinsson and his wife Ebba Guðrún Brynhildur Flóventsdóttir in Siglufjörður in northern Iceland. Between 1948 and 1964 he took part in the Icelandic ski jumping championships. In 1953, 1958, 1960 and 1962 the member of Skíðafélag Siglufjarðar was able to win the national championship title. He took part in the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley as the third Icelandic ski jumper after Jónas Þórarinn Ásgeirsson (1948) and Ari Friðbjörn Guðmundsson (1952); with two jumps of 64 m each, he landed from the normal hill with 155.7 points on the 43rd place among 45 participants.

Skarphéðinn worked for a credit institute since 1950 and was an active social democrat . In May 1993, he suddenly fell ill and had to retire. Skarphéðinn died at the age of 72 in the Hrafnista nursing home in Hafnarfjörður in southwest Iceland. He had been married to Esther Önnu Jóhannsdóttir since 1951 and had seven children with her.
