Jónas Þórarinn Ásgeirsson (born August 25, 1920 in Húsavík , † June 14, 1996 in Kópavogur ) was an Icelandic ski jumper and Nordic combined athlete .

Career

Jónas Þórarinn was born in Húsavík in northern Iceland and moved with his family to Siglufjörður when he was one year old . Between 1939 and 1955 he was Icelandic Nordic Combined Champion five times, and between 1943 and 1957 he won the national championship in ski jumping seven times. He was also active as a football player at Knattspyrnufélag Siglufjarða (KS). In 1946 Jónas Þórarinn, as a member of the Skíðafélag Siglufjarðar in Siglufjörður, achieved 54 m, the longest jump on Icelandic soil at that time. In 1947 he took part in jumping on Holmenkollbakken and was the first Icelandic ski jumper at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz ; with two jumps on 57 m and 59.5 m he landed from the normal hill with 179.8 points on the 37th place. He later took over his father's business in Siglufjörður, but moved with his family to Reykjavík in 1968 , where he worked as a car salesman until his retirement in 1982. He died at the age of 75 in Kópavogur, southwest Iceland.
