Skeo (Symbister)
The Skeo of Symbister is a detached building on the beach of the capital of the Shetlands counting Island Whalsay . It is one of the few larger, commercially used skeos still in existence , a type of drywall construction that used to be widespread in the Shetlands and the Orkneys , in which food, in this case fish , was air- dried . The Skeo, built in the late 19th century , is a listed building in Category C and is therefore a listed building.
The rectangular building with a corrugated iron roof is made of granite : the main part of the outer walls consists of irregularly assembled rubble stones , at the corners there are ashlar stones . There are eight ventilation slots on each of the two long sides, arranged on two different levels. On the transverse side facing the sea there is a door with an overlying segment arch . The landside entrance area has a double wooden sliding door, which, like the plaster , which can only be found on this transverse side, is of more recent date.
