The Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn is a ski area in Austria. The winter sports area extends over the towns of Saalbach, Hinterglemm and Leogang in the Salzburger Land and Fieberbrunn in Tyrol . It extends over the mountains of the Glemmtal on both sides of the valley and is complemented by a connection to Leogang and Fieberbrunn . Since the area is laid out around the valley and the municipality of Saalbach-Hinterglemm , the term “ Skicircus ” was chosen.

  • Probably the most famous area in the Skicircus Saalbach-Hinterglemm / Leogang / Fieberbrunn is located below the Kohlmais head on the northern side of the Glemmtal. There are particularly medium-difficulty slopes here, including a World Cup route from the 1991 Alpine World Ski Championships .
  • To the west of Kohlmais are the Bernkogel, Reiterkogel and Hochalm . Here, too, the runs are mostly easy or moderately difficult.
  • The highest point in the Skicircus is the "west summit" of the Schattberg (2096 meters) on the opposite side of the valley. The Schattberg actually consists of two mountains, "Schattberg East" and "Schattberg West", and offers more challenging slopes.
  • The Zwölferkogel is the most difficult area in the entire area. The World Cup track and a World Cup slope also bear witness to this.

Furnishing

There are currently 69 lifts in the Skicircus, including 27 gondola lifts , 21 chair lifts and 21 drag lifts or practice lifts. The transport capacity of the 69 lifts is around 126,000 people per hour in winter.

According to the operator, the slopes are groomed over a length of 270 kilometers. Of these, 140 are classified as easy, 110 as moderate and 20 as difficult.

All main runs and numerous secondary runs are equipped with artificial snow-making technology. Twelve storage ponds and a total of 927 snow guns are used for this.

development

The beginnings of the Skicircus are around 1900. At that time the idea arose in the area to teach the children of the residents how to ski. After the then small village had overcome a few crises, the Glemmtaler Straße was expanded. On September 17, 1945, a few men founded the Saalbach ski lift company . First, a drag lift and a chair lift will be built on the Kohlmais . Two years later, the construction of a chair lift on the Schattberg and a baby lift on the so-called Turmwiese and one in Wallehen followed . In 1948, the Saalbach ski and sports club was founded to manage the sports sector. At that time, Saalbach was one of the four largest tourist destinations in Austria, along with Salzburg City, Badgastein and Hof Gastein . In 1950/1951 the Zwölferkogel community was founded in Hinterglemm , which commissioned the construction of the T-bar lifts over the Auergsuach to the spherical trees . The existing lifts were modernized and extended in the following years. Furthermore, numerous new lifts were built. In 1959, construction work began on the cable car on Schattberg-West and the Limberglift . These projects were completed on December 20, 1960. This cable car gained fame as the “largest cable car in the world floating on a cable”. In the summer of 2003, after more than 40 years, this chairlift was replaced by the eight-EUB gondola lift Westgipfel with middle station.

In operation since winter 2006/07: The converted Leogang valley station

At the end of the 1970s, the Riederfeldlift pommel lift and the Seekar lift drag lift were built , which are still in operation today. The three- seater chairlift on the Kohlmais was built in the 1980s , as was the Schönleitenbahn between 1987 and 1989 , which leads from Vorderglemm to the Wildenkarkogel . For the 1989/1990 ski season, a standing gondola called Zwölfer-Nordbahn was built from the Hochalm to the Zwölferkogel . For the 1991 Alpine Ski World Championships , the Kohlmaisgipfelbahn , a group of ten gondolas , was built. A year later, the Asitz cable car I + II began operating from Leogang to the Asitz . In 1993 the Zwöferkogelbahn , a red eight-one-cable gondola from Hinterglemm to the Zwölferkogel , on which the mountain station of the Zwölfer-Nordbahn is located, was built. Two years later, the Limberg 4-seater chairlift was built , the mountain station of which is on Schattberg Ost . In the winter of 1996/1997, the Hochalm 6er , which leads up to the Reichkendlkopf , opened in Hinterglemm . A year later, the eight-person Reiterkogelbahn gondola started operating as a feeder to the Hasenauerköpfl . For the 1998/1999 season, three new button lifts and the Polten four-person chair lift were built. In the following two years the chairlifts Sportbahn Asitzkogel 2000 , Spieleck 6-seater chairlift and Sunliner Reitergipfel 4- seater were built . The next investment in the Skicircus was the construction of the Schattberg X-press , an approximately 2,700 meter long eight-person gondola lift that transports around 2,300 people per hour and leads to the Schattberg-Ost . For the following winter, the six- person Zehner chairlifts were built on the Zwölferkogel and Asitzmuldenbahn , which leads to the small Asitz .

Investments were made in four new systems for the 2005/2006 ski season. One of them was the Hochalmbahn , which transports tourists from the valley station of the Zwölfer-Nordbahn to the valley stations of the Spieleck and Hochalm lifts . In Saalbach, the Magic 6er Bergeralm and the Panorama 6er Kohlmais were reopened on the Kohlmais . The Oberschwarzach pommel lift went into operation in Hinterglemm itself . The Schönleiten 6-person summit lift , which runs parallel to the second section of the Schönleiten lift , and the Schattberg Sprinter , which connects the Schattberg-East with the Schattberg-West , transported tourists for the first time in winter 2006. A year later, the Asitz 8- seater summit lift was built instead of the old four-seater chair lift.

A major project in the Skicircus was completed in summer 2009 when three new chair lifts were built in the ski area. On the so-called Turmwiese on the Kohlmaiskopf , a drag lift has been replaced by a six- person chair lift with heated seats. Instead of the four-seater chairlift on the Hasenauerköpfl , a heated eight- seater chairlift now transports tourists to this point. In Leogang, at the middle station of the Asitzbahn, a four-seater chairlift was built instead of a drag lift.

For the winter of 2010/2011, the escape light slope of the ski area was enlarged and modernized in Hinterglemm with the help of the new eight-person gondola lift Unterschwarzach , which was built for a drag lift.

In the summer of 2011, the Reiter Ost double chairlift was replaced by a six-seater chairlift. In the same year, an eight- person cabin lift with heated seats replaced the three-seater chairlift on the Bernkogel . These projects were completed in October 2011. The construction of a storage pond at the Wetterkreuz was also started. In the summer of 2012, the previous drag lift at the Wetterkreuz was replaced by a detachable six-seater chair lift. The reservoir and the new chairlift were opened with an inauguration at the beginning of the 2012/2013 winter season.

For the 2013/14 season, a drag lift was again replaced by a detachable six-seater chairlift. The new Rosswaldbahn is now at the location of the old Rosswaldlift and serves to connect the lifts on the Hochalm (Spieleck, Reichkendlkopf) with the Reiterkogel. In addition, the Skicircus has been continuously expanding its snowmaking systems for a few years.

In the winter of 2014/15, the Polten 4-seater chairlift was replaced by a modern eight- seater chairlift , and after seven years of planning, a new gondola lift, the Steinbergbahn , was built in the Asitz area to relieve the Asitzbahn . In the village of Saalbach, the old house in which the tourism association was located was torn down and a new, more modern tourist information building was built.

However, the merger with the Schmittenhöhe that had been planned in recent years was not realized for the time being. The first step in the merger, however, is the reopening of a ski route from the Schmittenhöhe to Viehhofen. This already existed from the 1930s to the 1980s and was therefore largely reopened without any problems.

The merger with the Fieberbrunn ski area was realized for the 2015/2016 season. A new 10-person monocable gondola called TirolS runs from the valley station of the Reckmoos-Süd gondola in Fieberbrunn to the Reiterkogel between Saalbach and Hinterglemm. Fieberbrunn is spending around 20 million euros on this, and the people of Salzburg are providing the land for the mountain station of the railway. The construction of the new connection began in spring 2015. At the same time, the anchor lifts on the Bernkogel were replaced by a detachable six-person chairlift. The construction of the second section of the “Viehhofen-Salersbachköpfl” railway, which will run along the ski route from the Schmittenhöhe to Viehhofen, has also begun . The construction of the 500-meter-long first section is to begin the following year, so that entry from Viehhofen into the Schmittenhöhe ski area is possible. The total investment is around 25 million euros.

For the 2016/2017 season, the Schönleitenbahn, built in 1987, will be replaced by a modern 10-person gondola lift with heated seats. In addition, a connecting lift called "12er Express" will be built from the practice lifts in the Westgipfel area to the Zwölferkogel, which will make the two mountains easier to reach.

In autumn 2018, the construction of the zellamseeXpress I (Viehhofen-Winkelstation) began, which enables entry into the Schmittenhöhe ski area . In addition, the Kohlmaisbahn was replaced by a new 10-seater gondola in summer 2018. The new middle station was built in the summer of 2017. In addition, the old Asitzmuldenbahn 6-seater on the Asitz was replaced by a modern 8-seater single-cable gondola.

Another project that is to be implemented in the coming years is the new construction of the Zwölferkogelbahn in the form of a 10-seater gondola lift.
