history

In 1977 Günther Walcher developed the first machine-printed ski ticket with a photo, thus replacing handwritten ski passes. The company Skidata was founded in Grödig near Salzburg for marketing and further development . In 1979 the first cash register was created, an electromagnetic stamping device for printing tickets. The first 320 access readers were installed in a ski area in 1983. This enabled billing within ski pools, which allows ski areas to merge. In the early 1980s, Skidata developed magnetic stripe tickets and introduced a system for billing in large ski areas and ski area associations. By 1986 the market share for access management in ski areas rose to over 80 percent. At the end of the 1980s, Skidata brought the first access systems with contactless technology onto the market and expanded its range to include parking space management, sports arenas, fun parks and trade fairs. In 1992 Munich Airport was equipped with a parking management system, and in 1991 Messe Düsseldorf was equipped. In 1997, the French chip card manufacturer Gemplus became the majority owner of Skidata . In 2001, Skidata was taken over by the Swiss Kudelski Group. At the soccer world and European championships in 2004 (Portugal), 2006 (Germany), 2008 (Switzerland and Austria), 2010 (South Africa) and 2012 (Poland and Ukraine), the stadiums were equipped with Skidata systems. In 2010 Skidata won Dallas / Fort Worth one of the world's largest airports as a park customer. In 2012 Skidata Online was presented as a separate product. This means that locally managed systems are hosted in the cloud. In 2014 Skidata founded or bought several subsidiaries: Brazil, India, Uruguay, Malaysia and Turkey In 2015 the American distributor "Sentry Control Systems" was taken over. In 2016, Skidata installed a parking space management and personal access system for the Otkrytije Arena in Moscow , which has 42,000 spectators and 3,000 parking spaces. In March 2016, Skidata renewed the entire family park access system. In April 2016, Skidata signed a contract with the city of Amsterdam , which includes the installation of systems in 22 parks with around 25,000 parking spaces.

Loyalty.Logic was developed by Skidata for the winter sports industry and helps operators to improve and strengthen relationships with their customers. Skidata and other partners are making a new Vikings app available to Minnesota Vikings fans, which includes features such as digital ticket options, route maps, and ordering food and drinks.

In May 2016, the electronic parking management system at Salzburg Airport was installed by Skidata . The system manages 3,200 parking spaces at the airport.

criticism

In order to suppress illegal transactions with expired or used ski passes, Skidata introduced a camera system that takes a head photo when entering the lift for the first time in order to compare it with subsequent entries on a random basis. The surveillance of skiers to prevent the trade in ski passes has been criticized.
