The scorpion wing snail or gnarled wing snail , also scorpion snail ( Lambis scorpius ) is a snail from the family of pteropods (genus Lambis ), which is widespread in the Malay Archipelago and in the western Pacific .
features
The elongated egg-shaped, humped, humped and nodular, crosswise furrowed snail shell of Lambis scorpius reaches a length of 13 to 17 cm in adult snails. At the edge of the mouth (including the siphon canal) sit 7 finger-like, curved, lengthwise nodular appendages, of which the siphon canal, curved like a scorpion's tail, is the longest and the middle ones are the shortest. The surface of the case is white with red spots, the mouth and throat purple-red with white horizontal wrinkles.
distribution and habitat
The scorpion wing snail occurs in the tropical west Pacific , from western Indonesia to western Polynesia , from southern Japan to northern Queensland ( Australia ) and to New Caledonia .
The snail lives in protected areas of coral reefs under rocks, in the shallow water of the intertidal zone and a little below to a depth of about 5 meters. Like other wing snails, it feeds on algae .
Use and hazard
Lambis scorpius is collected for its case, which is sold as jewelry.
