French Rugby Union Championship 1996/97

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1996/97 season was the 98th edition of the French Rugby Union Championship. It comprised 20 teams in the top division (today's top 14 ).

The championship was divided into two phases. It began with the qualifying round, in which ten teams played against each other in two groups. The eight best placed in both groups moved into the knockout round, while the last two in each group had to relegate to the second division. This concerned the RC Nîmes , the CA Périgueux , the Paris Université Club and Stade Dijonnais .

The home game of the knockout round, in which 16 teams were still involved, resulted from the better placement in the qualifying round. The quarter-finals and the semi-finals followed the round of 16. The two semi-final winners met in the final, which was held for the last time on May 31, 1997 at the Parc des Princes in Paris . Stade Toulousain prevailed against CS Bourgoin-Jallieu and won the championship title for the 14th time.
