The Sculpture Park TU Kaiserslautern was created with funds from the art in building scheme. Accordingly, when the Technical University of Kaiserslautern was founded in 1970, at least 1% of the building sum should be spent on works by visual artists.

History of origin

One of the first international sculpture symposiums in Rhineland-Palatinate was held in 1982 on the grounds of the University of Kaiserslautern . Stone sculptures by 20 artists from 8 countries were set up on campus and in the interiors of institutes.

“The state government of Rhineland-Palatinate provides an amount for the artistic design of all building construction measures, which (...) can amount to up to 2% of the construction costs. (...) At the University of Kaiserslautern, the artistic design should not be limited to the buildings, but should include the free and pedestrian areas. "

- Finance Minister Dr. Carl-Ludwig Wagner (1982)

The flowing transition of the funding programs from art in buildings to art in public spaces becomes clear here.

At a second symposium in 1987, works were set up in the area of the university residential area. Individual works followed until 2005, so that today 40 figurative and abstract works of art characterize the entire university area artistically and reveal a 25-year history of sculpture.
