Sky Radio is a Dutch private radio broadcaster operated by the Sky Radio group. The station almost exclusively plays music, interrupted only by advertising, news, weather and traffic information. Between 1997 and 2004 Sky Radio was the most listened to radio station in the Netherlands.

Sky Radio began broadcasting on September 30, 1988. At first, the program could only be received via cable. In 1992 the station received a terrestrial frequency for the first time and could also be heard in the west of the Netherlands. In the following years, the frequency assignments were changed several times, so that Sky Radio has been broadcast throughout the Netherlands since 2003.

In addition, Sky Radio can also be received digitally via the Astra 3B satellite.

history

Sky Radio went on air on September 30, 1988 as a self-proclaimed "spin-off" of the TV broadcaster Sky Channel at the time. At that time it belonged to the News Corporation , which owned the British media The Sun , The Times and, until 1991, the Sky Channel. Like all private radio stations, Sky Radio was not allowed to be broadcast over FM or cable, as this was only allowed to public broadcasters in the Netherlands at the time. Therefore, the program was officially broadcast from abroad and could therefore be broadcast over the Dutch cable network.

In the years that followed, Sky Radio's audience continued to grow. The broadcaster therefore tried several times to get permission to broadcast, which was repeatedly refused. The situation worsened as the broadcaster was assigned ever poorer frequencies and the public broadcasting slots were protected.

Between July and December 1992, Sky Radio brought a new additional radio station called Hitradio . In December 1992 the transmitter was replaced by Radio 538 .

After lengthy legal negotiations, Sky Radio was also allowed to go terrestrial on September 15, 1995 on the frequency 100.7 FM . In autumn 1996 it had the greatest success in its broadcasting history, when it had more listeners than Radio 3 (now 3FM ), at that time the most listened to radio station in the Netherlands.

In January 1998 Sky Radio got a second frequency with 100.4 FM. A month later, the station celebrated its 10th anniversary with a big party. In March 2001 the government decided that transmission frequencies should be auctioned off to the highest bidder. The private broadcasters and their listeners felt that they were being treated unfairly because they couldn't pay as much money as the public broadcasters. Due to this resistance, the auction was canceled. In December 2002 it was decided that the frequencies would be reassigned, regardless of whether they were from private or public broadcasters. On May 26, 2003, Sky Radio was assigned the 101 FM frequency range. Since then, the station has been called Sky Radio 101 FM . In March 2005, Sky Radio got a new design and a completely new logo, which gave the station a new boost.

On February 1, 2006, Sky Radio was bought by the Sky Radio Group . The News Corporation sold Sky Radio 101 FM, Radio Veronica , Classic FM and Sky Radio Hessen in Germany to a consortium led by the Telegraaf Media Groep .
