Slaviša Popović

Slaviša Popović (born May 23, 1968 ) is a former Yugoslav - Serbian light middleweight boxer and bronze medalist at the 1995 World Cup.

Boxing career

Popović started boxing in Pristina and won several regional championships and international tournaments, including the Acropolis Cup in Athens in 1993 .

At the European Championships in 1993 in Bursa , he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Husein Kurbanow from Russia, after he had previously defeated the Slovenian Boris Horvat. At the World Championships in Berlin in 1995, he came through a bye and victories against Ilia Tlaschadze from Georgia, Rumen Sotirow from Bulgaria and Józef Gilewski from Poland in the semifinals, where he lost to the Cuban Alfredo Duvergel . He became the only medalist from Yugoslavia or a Yugoslav successor state at the boxing world championships between 1989 and 2001.

In 1996 he entered the European Championships in Vejle , beat Krasimir Ininski from Bulgaria in the preliminary round, but lost in the round of 16 against Joern Johnson from Norway. Also at the European Championships in Minsk in 1998 , he lost in the first fight against Tengis Jaoshvili from Georgia.

From 1999 to 2004 he finally played eight professional fights, including five wins and three losses. He has lived in Paris with his family since 2003 .
