Sled Dowabobo (born March 31, 1983 in Nauru ) is a Nauru judoka .

Life

At the age of 13, Dowabobo discovered his love for judo, which in contrast to weightlifting plays a rather subordinate role on Nauru and is not subsidized by the state. He began to train in the local judo club, but always practiced the sport alongside his work as a construction worker and carpenter. He took part in various small judo tournaments because he could not financially afford to participate in larger competitions.

Since 2009 Dowabobo has been sponsored by the Oceanic Judo Union (OJU), which received funding from the International Judo Federation in preparation for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. The OJU was able to organize training camps and grant scholarships in several Pacific countries. Dowabobo attended a training camp in Samoa for two years , where he was trained by New Zealander Patrick Mahon. The financial support of the OJU also enabled him to take part in judo tournaments overseas. Among other things, he competed against David Papaux at the World Cup in Apia in 2010 and against Edson Marcel Madeira at the World Cup in Paris and against Alejandro Clara in Apia. Dowabobo lost all competitions. Although he was 136th in the world rankings in his class up to 73 kilograms at the time of the Olympic qualification, he was qualified as one of 34 judoka in his weight class for the 2012 Olympic Games in London “thanks to a confused qualification system” . This made him the eighth athlete to be sent to the Olympic Games by the Nauru Olympic Committee . He was also the first non-weightlifter to represent Nauru at the Olympics. Nauru was - with Dowabobo and weightlifter Itte Detenamo - also the smallest Olympic team in London in 2012.

Dowabobo trained in the training camp on Samoa from 2010 to December 2011. This was followed by several months of training in Brisbane until May 2012 , where Dowabobo gained further experience in the judo club of his coach Patrick Mahon. From June 2012 Dowabobo stayed at the University of Bath for further training. On July 30, 2012 Dowabobo lost in judo in the first round of the class up to 73 kilograms after 70 seconds against the Uzbek Navroʻz Joʻraqobilov .

Most recently, Dowabobo took part in the OJU's Oceanian Championships Seniors in 2015 and 2016. There he took 5th or 7th place.
