Slendro

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Slendro ( Salendro in Sundanese ) is the Javanese name for a 5-point scale that is used in Indonesian music (especially gamelan music) alongside Pélog .

The sound system

Since Slendro is not a (anhemitonic) pentatonic scale (like CDFGAC), it was assumed that Slendro was a 5-note scale with the same temperament , i.e. H. the five intervals are all the same size (240 cents ; 100 cents are an equally  tempered semitone ). Measurements have shown, however, that the Slendro's interval sequence cannot be classified into any generally applicable system. The octaves are not pure (i.e. not in a frequency ratio of  1: 2), and the sequence of intervals is different within the different octave positions:

Measurements (interval sequence in cents)
Octave range 1972 in Surakarta 2018 on gamelan instruments from Surakarta,
located in the Overseas Museum Bremen is
high 249, 256, 250, 253, 246 243, 238, 263, 236, 244
medium 252, 238, 241, 266, 253 266, 263, 251, 239, 260
deep 281, 221, 223, 246, 222 244, 238, 240, 230, 235

A "regularity" of the mood cannot be seen. The mood of gamelan instruments fluctuates from workshop to workshop, for example between Surakarta and Yogyakarta or Bali , but is the same within a workshop and among all instruments in a gamelan orchestra.

The mood

Javanese associate Slendro with a “deep feeling of happiness”. Slendro is felt to be radiant and invigorating and is used in the Javanese shadow play ( Wayang Kulit).
