Slepp nynorsken til!

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Slepp nynorsken til! (free translation: "Give Nynorsk a chance!") was an initiative and collection of signatures to support the minority language Nynorsk in the Norwegian press. The aim of the campaign, which was launched by the language association Noregs Mållag , was to force two large national daily newspapers in Norway ( Verdens Gang and Dagbladet ) to lift the alleged "ban" against the Nynorsk. The newspapers are published in Bokmål and all editorial articles must be written in this language. The campaign ended on October 22, 2005 with the handing over of 36,017 signatures to the representative of the daily newspaper Dagbladet in Det Norske Teatret .

The Norwegian Language Council and its then chairman, the Norwegian linguist Sylfest Lomheim , declared their support for the initiative. They suggested that journalists should refuse to write everything in the Norwegian majority language, Bokmål , and that the press should cut subsidies and tax exemptions. These demands were rejected by the Norwegian press landscape and were not heard in politics. In some cases, calls for sanctions against the press were seen, from their point of view, as an interference with freedom of the press .
