The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center ( MSKCC ) is a private cancer hospital in New York . The clinic is located in Manhattan , is attached to the large New York Hospital and is part of Cornell University . The origins go back to 1884. In the 1940s, two former General Motors managers, Alfred P. Sloan and Charles F. Kettering , who have given the facility its name ever since, got involved.

Craig B. Thompson has served as president of the facility since 2010 ; he succeeded Harold Varmus and Paul A. Marks (1980 to 1999).

Surgery at the MSKCC, in particular, is treated in so-called services , which means that small teams of specialists take care of their patients. There are specialized services for hepatobiliary surgery, gastric and mixed tumors , thoracic surgery, breast surgery, plastic surgery, head and neck surgery, etc.

The MSKCC is also scientifically active in the treatment of oncological diseases. Many contributions to cancer therapy come from this institution. In the early 1940s, Eleanor Josephine Macdonald had set up a department for medical statistics here, a forerunner of today's clinical cancer registries .

In pop culture

The story of the concept album Hospice by the American indie rock band The Antlers takes place in the palliative wing of this clinic.
