Hospice -

Hospice is the third studio album by the American indie rock band The Antlers . It is also their first concept album . It was still distributed by the band in March 2009, but was released commercially in August as soon as they had a recording contract with Frenchkiss Records .

The songs Bear and Two on the album were released as singles.

concept

Hospice tells the story of an emotionally abusive relationship, which is explained by the analogy of a hospice worker (or husband - not exactly clarified) and a patient named Sylvia. Sylvia has incurable bone cancer and is being treated at the real Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center . The other songs clarify that the two had known each other for a long time and that Sylvia had already had an abortion. At the end of the album, Sylvia dies and the hospice worker remains lonely.
The band's front man, Peter Silberman, is keeping a low profile as to how the lyrics on the record should be interpreted and to what extent the content is autobiographical.

reception

The album received very positive reviews. Pitchfork named the record Best New Music and placed Hospice at # 37 on the best albums of 2009. The site praised the "power to emotionally wipe the listener [of the album]".

NPR Music even rated it as the best album of the year.

The critic Christoph Dorner from laut.de called the album "one of the most stirring indie rock records of the year" and gave the record four out of five points.
