The Slunjčica [ sluɲtʃitsa ], locals often Slušnica [ sluːʃnitsa called] is a karst river in central Croatia in the area of Kordun . Typical of the Slunjčica is its clear, emerald green shimmering water.

Course and properties

In the Lika , in the massif of the Mala Kapela Mountains under the Veliki Javornik peak, the river Jesenica rises , which disappears underground after only 6 kilometers near the village Lička Jasenica . The river, like many other karst rivers in Croatia , then runs about 20 km underground through karst ( limestone ). 6.5 km south of Slunj, it comes to the surface again as the Slunjčica river.

In the Rastoke district , the Slunjčica flows into the Korana , which flows from the Plitvice Lakes . The name of the town Slunj can be derived from this river. At the mouth of the Slunjčica and Korana, the river creates a travertine barrier 500 m wide and 200 m long. This imposing limestone layer is created by the high content of calcium , which, due to the underground course of the river, accumulates in the water and is later deposited in the area of the Rastoke settlement. The travertine barrier creates two levels. The lower level ends with 23 waterfalls, which plunge into the Korana, which is 10 to 20 m lower. The barrier is lined with numerous smaller waterfalls and water eddies along its entire length.

Due to the relatively short course of the river on the earth's surface, the Slunjčica always has a lower temperature than the nearby Korana. The water temperature is between 6.5 ° C and 7 ° C in winter and a maximum of 16 ° C in summer. In summer, the maximum temperature of the Korana is around 28 ° C. If the air cools below the water temperature, the Rastoke are enveloped in a mysterious veil of mist and the surrounding trees are covered with dew . The river is also a drinking water reservoir for the surrounding villages.
