Smörgåsbord
Smörgåsbord ( [ ˈsmœrɡɔsˌbuːɖ ] ) is a Swedish buffet that is served in restaurants and at private parties . The word smörgåsbord comes from smörgås " bread and butter " and bord "table", the word origin of smörgås (literally butter goose) dates back to the time when even self- buttered was. The flakes of butter that rose to the surface while churning were like white geese (gås) .
The buffet consists of cold and warm dishes. The guests serve themselves. A traditional smörgåsbord begins with various fish bites, such as gravad salmon (gravad lax) , smoked salmon (rökt lax) , pickled herring (inlagd sill) and smoked eel (rökt ål) . In the main part of the Smörgåsbord , warm dishes are offered, such as the traditional meatballs ( köttbullar ) , ribs (revben) , sausages (korvar) such as Isterband and falukorv , gratinated dishes (gratänger) and omelets (omeletter) . There are also potatoes, fried potatoes and sauce as well as cold meats and always different types of crispbread and bread with butter . In the third part you will find cheese and crackers and finally a dessert section with fruits and cakes.
A particularly festive form of the Smörgåsbord is the Julbord , which is popular with many families on December 24th during the Yule festival ( Jul means Christmas ) . Special delicacies such as Julskinka (“Christmas ham ”) are also served.
In English, smorgasbord is used as a synonym for a mixed bag or hodgepodge.
