Smörgås ( Swedish 'Butterbrot') is a richly filled sandwich and is part of Swedish cuisine . It is a typical dish in Sweden as well as Denmark  - where it is known under the Danish name Smørrebrød - and therefore an important part of Scandinavian cuisine .

The partial word smör of the double word stands for butter ( called smör in Swedish ). The word origin of smörgås (literally 'butter goose') comes from the time when people still buttered themselves . The flakes of butter that rose to the surface while churning were like white geese (Swedish gås ).

Ingredients and preparation

The Smörgås is not comparable to a standard in German-speaking "bread and butter", but rather represents a kind of sandwich or snack in the form of various, lush occupied slices of bread . Due to the rich bread topping , it is usually a full main meal and not just a small snack as a snack between meals .
