SmartShuttle is a project by Swiss Post , or its subsidiary PostAuto Schweiz AG , with the aim of testing self-driving vehicles in public transport.

history

Since June 23, 2016, two self-driving electric vehicles have been in operation in downtown Sion in the canton of Valais . PostBus has a special permit from the Swiss authorities, which allows the self-driving vehicles to be tested on a specific route and for a period limited to October 2017.

By September 2016, the system had made around 800 trips and carried 7,000 passengers.

In March 2017, the system was also presented at the CEBIT in Hanover .

After a year of operation, the two SmartShuttle had carried 21,500 passengers in Sion.

vehicles

The SmartShuttle project uses autonomous vehicles from the French start-up manufacturer Navya . The Navya vehicles have an electric drive and sensors for navigation and obstacle detection.

The two Navya Arma models used in Sion have eleven seats and four standing places and can reach a top speed of 20 km / h.

Incidents

On September 21, 2016, one of the test vehicles caused a collision with a parked delivery van. The test operation was then temporarily suspended. In October 2016, after adjustments, test operations were resumed.
