Smiljan is a village in the hilly landscape of the Lika in central Croatia . It is a district of the seven kilometers west town of Gospic and located 15 kilometers from the highway Zagreb - Split away. The village has 446  inhabitants (2001).

Personalities

Nikola Tesla (1856–1943), electrical engineer and important inventor, was born here. There is a memorial in the house where he was born, the rectory of St. Peter and Paul Church . The Lika belonged to the time of his birth - under the Habsburg Franz Joseph I. - the Croatian Military Frontier , which reports directly to the Empire of Austria was under and in the until 1882 Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia was incorporated.
