Smiltynė (before 1945 German  Sandkrug ) is the northernmost place on the Curonian Spit . It is a district of the port city of Klaipėda (German: Memel ) in Lithuania , but separated from it by the Curonian Lagoon , which is about 500 m wide here. There is a ferry service between the districts. At the northern tip of the headland is the Kopgalis fortress, which was built by the Prussians in 1865–1871 . Today the fortress houses the Lithuanian Maritime Museum , with an aquarium and a dolphinarium. The former German name of this part of the spit was " Süderspitze ", which is actually confusing. The name should indicate the southern entrance to the ports of Memel.
