The white-footed narrow-foot pouch mouse ( Sminthopsis leucopus ) is a species of marsupial from the genus of narrow-foot pouch mice that is endemic to Australia .

description

The total body length of this species is 140 to 200 mm, with the very thin tail making up 70 to 110 mm of it. The weight varies between 19 and 27 g. The back fur is dark brown, a black stripe runs across the top. The belly, like the paws, is white.

distribution and habitat

The distribution area of Sminthopsis leucopus is limited to Tasmania and southern Australia. The species lives along the coast, in temperate rainforests , in the interior of Gippsland and in alpine areas at an altitude of up to 400 m near Narbethong in Victoria . It colonizes areas with an annual precipitation between 600 and 1000 mm. In contrast to the thick-tailed narrow-foot bag mouse , it also lives in areas that are largely forested. Other habitats are tussock grasslands, sedge groves and humid heathland areas on the coast . The territories of the males and females take up an area of ​​about 120 m², some males take up areas of up to 1200 m². The territories of the males often overlap those of the females.

The mating season is between July and August, cubs are born between August and September. The males die about a month after the young are born. The females usually only throw once in a lifetime. The litter size is about ten young that stay in the pouch for eight weeks. The species is nocturnal . During the day, the animals remain in hollow trees and rotten tree trunks.

The diet consists of invertebrates and reptiles from 1 to 18 mm in length.

The current status is uncertain, but it is believed that the species is not endangered as it occurs in many different habitats.
