The Smith Bluffs are a number icy cliffs with numerous rock outcroppings on Dustin Iceland before Eights Coast of the West Antarctic Ellsworthlands . They mark the north side of the island and the southern boundary of Seraph Bay .
They were discovered in February 1960 during helicopter flights from the USS Burton Island and the USS Glacier on the expedition of the United States Navy into the Bellingshausen Sea . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the cliffs in 1960 after Philip Meek Smith (* 1932) of the National Science Foundation , who was involved in this research trip as a representative of the United States Antarctic Research Program .
