The Smith Cleaver (from English cleaver , Hackbeil ' ) is about 3.6 km long Nunatak in the Britannia Range of Transantarctic Mountains . It rises in the center of the Lieske Glacier . It is narrow, mostly free of ice, and is defined by a sharp ridge .
The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named him in 2009 after Scott F. Smith, who from 1991 was involved in the construction and maintenance of facilities on various Antarctic stations as part of the United States Antarctic Program , including nine campaigns at the McMurdo station and eleven campaigns the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station .
