Bill Callahan (* 1966 in Silver Spring , Maryland , USA ) is an American singer and songwriter who is one of the pioneers of Lo-Fi with his songs, which were initially recorded with the simplest production on four-track recorders . Since 1991 he has been publishing on the Drag City label . He first appeared under the name Smog or (Smog) , but since 2007 under his real name. Callahan currently lives in Austin , Texas .

Career

Although Callahan was born in Maryland, his family lived in Knaresborough , North Yorkshire for eight years , returning to Maryland for only 1969–1973.

Callahan's first releases appeared on audio cassettes under the band name Smog . These were characterized by sparse melodies and dissonant arrangements. Thus they corresponded roughly to Callahan's instrumental and technical production capabilities at the time. His debut album Sewn to the Sky caused a stir with its out of tune guitars and repetitive structures and was reminiscent of the work of Jandek and Daniel Johnston . With the beginning of the work at Drag City the musical potential of his music expanded. B. was produced by John McEntire and Jim O'Rourke . Callahan not only developed his lyrical, often black-humored abilities, his arrangements also became richer at first. Between 2001 and 2003 he called the band (Smog) and returned to simpler productions, but without giving up the lyrical sophistication that he now stood for.

In 2006 he decided to use his real name and dropped the pseudonym Smog . The first studio album as Bill Callahan was released in 2007 with Woke on a Whaleheart , followed by Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle in 2009 . The album Apocalypse was released in 2011 and Dreamriver in 2013 .
