The Smoothwater River is a river in the southern Westland District in the West Coast region of New Zealand's South Island.
It rises from several source streams in the Stafford Range east of Lake Ellery and flows through a wide plain between the Stafford Range and the Burmeister Tops to the north. It takes in the water of several tributaries, including the Sparkle Rill , Kapako Creek, and Saddle Creek .
After about eight kilometers, it joins the Tasman Sea east of Jackson Bay at Smoothwater Bay .
