Smuxi is a free , irssi- inspired and platform-independent IRC client , whose target group is the Gnome user interface . He is the pioneer for the concept of separating the front end and the application core , which manages the connection to the IRC servers . Both are combined in one graphic application.

architecture

Smuxi is based on the client-server model : the core of the application can run on a server that is connected to the Internet around the clock . One or more clients can then be connected to the core so that connection to IRC networks is maintained while the clients are closed. It also makes it possible to access the Smuxi server from any computer and receive IRC messages at any time. The combination of the Screen and Irssi applications served as a model for this architecture.

It is also possible to run the core of the application locally. In this case, Smuxi works like an ordinary IRC client; no additional administration of the application core is necessary.

Functionalities

In contrast to a bouncer , the architecture of Smuxi enables the display of the original time stamps as well as the display of highlights that have been received since the front end was detached. In addition, Smuxi enables the configuration and storage of the settings in the engine, so that the configuration only has to be done once, even when connecting different front ends. Furthermore, Smuxi supports the coloring of nicks with identical colors across all channel and IRC networks , as well as a caret mode , similar to that found in Firefox , which allows navigation through the messages using the keyboard. In addition to the usual functionalities, such as support for CTCP, channel search and nickname completion, the colors for font, background and highlighting can be changed. The client offers a graphical user interface with tabs in which conversation windows can be rearranged. Smuxi can connect to both a local engine and a remote engine using a drop-down menu (similar to screen when used with irssi). The Twitter protocol is already implemented as the first protocol alongside the IRC protocol. The user-defined highlight list was also implemented. Words can now be defined that are highlighted instead of just lines in which the exact nick was used, as was previously the case. Filters can also be set individually. It is thus possible to filter out none, only certain or all event messages as well as normal messages. This can even be done on a protocol or channel-specific basis.

Planned functionalities for the upcoming version

A few more functionalities are planned for the coming versions of Smuxi. These include support for SSL and IPv6 , as well as HTTP / SOCKS - proxy . So there should be a user-defined list of words that are highlighted instead of just lines in which the exact nick was used as before.

distribution

Smuxi can already be found in most major Linux distributions . For example in: Debian and Debian GNU / kFreeBSD , Ubuntu , Gentoo Linux , Arch Linux , and openSUSE Community Repository.

Furthermore, Smuxi is available for Windows 2000 / XP / Vista / 7 / 8.x (32-bit and 64-bit architecture).

Reviews

“If you're looking for IRC clients you're spoiled for choice with many distributions, as there are plenty to choose from. Some are text-based (IRSSI), some integrate well with instant messenger applications (Pidgin) while others are simply IRC clients through and through. Smuxi falls into the latter category, and we're glad it does, because it's a good little IRC client. "
