Blaine is a city in the US state of Minnesota . It is located in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area and has a population of around 57,000.
geography
The city is mainly located in Anoka County, only in the south an area of just under 0.5 square kilometers belongs to Ramsey County. According to the United States Census Bureau , the area of the city is 88.1 square kilometers, of which 0.4 square kilometers is water.
history
Blaine was created in 1862 east of Anoka when Irishman Phillip Laddy settled near the lake that is now called Laddie Lake in his memory . After he soon died, it was not until 1865 that a permanent settlement was established.
In 1877 the place became independent and was named in honor of the Republican politician James Gillespie Blaine . In 1880 128 people lived there. Blaine remained rural for a long time and agriculture was the main economic factor. This only changed after World War II, when Blaine experienced rapid population growth through suburbanization, increasing the population from 1,700 in 1950 to 45,000 in 2000.

Sports
The National Sports Center is an area of around 250 hectares with various sports facilities. There are, for example, 50 soccer fields, a golf course, a bike stadium and eight ice hockey fields. The USA Cup , a youth soccer tournament with many thousands of participants, takes place there every year. In 2001 the National Sports Center hosted the Women's Ice Hockey World Championship .
The Minnesota Thunder play their home games at the National Sports Center. The US women's national soccer team played their first home game on July 7, 1986 in Blaine. In total, the team played fourteen times in Blaine, more than in any other city.
