Vadnais Heights is located in the northern suburbs of Saint Paul at 45 ° 03'27 "north latitude and 93 ° 04'26" west longitude. The city extends over 21.34 km², which is spread over 18.08 km² of land and 3.26 km² of water.

The southern city limits are formed by Interstate 694 , a bypass off Interstate 94 . The eastern branch of Interstate 35 runs through the east of the city and is the fastest connection from Saint Paul to Duluth near the border with Canada . All other roads are subordinate routes or inner-city connecting roads.

By Vadnais Heights runs a railway line of the Soo Line Railroad and a little further east a line of the Minnesota Commercial Railway .

The nearest airport is Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, 17 miles southwest .
