The Township of Mounds View was established on May 11, 1858, the day the state of Minnesota was admitted to the Union.

For around a hundred years the township was rural and scattered.

The name Mounds View comes from the hills that lie in the northwest of what is now the urban area and from which one could overlook most of the area.

In 1958, the majority of the township's population decided to create the independent Village of MoundsView . In 1973 Mounds View was - like all independent municipalities in Minnesota - given the status of "City".
