The Snækollur is the highest mountain in the volcanic mountain range Kerlingarfjöll in Iceland at 1,482 meters .

Part of the Kerlingarfjöll

The Kerlingarfjöll are located in the highlands of Iceland a few kilometers east of the Kjölur slope.

The mountain is located in the eastern Kerlingarfjöll, the so-called Austurfjöll , in the middle of the mountain range east of the Hveradalir.

The mountain belongs to an extinct central volcano that was called Háinúper in earlier times. Therefore, the mountain consists of rhyolite rock . A small glacier lies on top of it.

Surname

It has a more or less wedge-shaped shape and is covered with snow or ice almost all year round, hence its Icelandic name, which translates as snow head .

Sports

Mountain hiking

It takes about three hours to climb from the huts in Árskarð , but the ascent is much shorter from the former ski area at the foot of the mountain (near the high temperature area of Hveradalir ). From the top of the mountain you have an excellent view over a large part of the highlands of Iceland and as far as the Westfjords .

The neighboring pointed peak of Loðmundur (1429 m) is also a popular destination for mountaineers.

Summer ski area

At Árskarð the Ferðafélag Íslands built a hut in 1937-38 and in the early 1960s a few other buildings for the ski school were built there. This existed until 1989 on the slope of Snækollur.

The climatic changes have made the former summer ski area unprofitable as such.
