The Snake River is a 167 km long river in eastern US -amerikanischen state of Minnesota . It is a right tributary of the St. Croix River , which flows into the Mississippi and forms the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin .

After the source in southern Aitkin County , the river initially runs northwest, but after about a kilometer turns in an arc to the south and flows east past McGrath . A few miles south of the river flows through the Snake River County Park .

Then the Snake River enters the neighboring Kanabec County to the south and flows through the Hay State Wildlife Management Area . Then the river begins to meander in wide loops . Further south, the Snake River passes the city of Mora , the administrative seat of Kanabec County and also the largest city on the Snake River. About three kilometers south of Mora, the river turns east and passes Grasston .

Pine County begins east of Grasston . After the Snake River passes south of Pokegama Lake , a bridge crosses it from Interstate 35 . East of the bridge on either side of the river is the urban area of Pine City , the administrative seat of Pine County. East of Pine City, the Snake River flows through Cross Lake . A few kilometers east the river enters the Chengwatana State Forest and reaches the confluence with the St. Croix River.
