Snapir ( Hebrew סנפיר, German  Flosse ) is a special unit of the Israeli Navy , as part of the Israeli Defense Forces . The Navy Patrol (formerly Port Security Unit) was founded in 1977. The Israeli Navy operates three Snapir units, one in Eilat and two in the Israeli Mediterranean ports of Ashdod and Haifa . Their tasks are the protection of ports, maritime border protection , underwater tasks and ship inspections. They are usually deployed in a group of four to five people and use 27-foot and 31-foot inflatable boats and Aerospatiale SA-321K Super Frelon helicopters with floats , known as Tzir'a ( German  wasp ) or Hornet ( German  hornet ) are known. Each boat is minimally equipped with a 7.62mm cannon, radar , camera , radio communications and several onboard M16 rifles .
