The Snare River is a river in the Canadian Northwest Territories .
The Snare River rises northwest of Jolly Lake - 200 km north-northeast of Yellowknife . It initially flows northwest towards Winter Lake . There it turns to the west and flows through the two elongated lakes Roundrock Lake and Snare Lake . The Snare River continues to flow to Indin Lake to the west . There the Indin River flows into it. It is now continuing its course to the southwest. The Ghost River flows into the Snare River on the left. After flowing through the lakes Kwejinne Lake , Bigspruce Lake , Strutt Lake and Slemon Lake , the river flows into the northern end of Russell Lake , which flows over the Russell Channel , Marian Lake and Frank Channel to the Great Slave Lake . The snare river has a length of about 400 km. Its catchment area covers more than 15,500 km². The mean discharge at the Bigspruce Lake gauge is 49 m³ / s.
On the course of the Snare River, the Northwest Territories Power Corporation operates several hydropower plants (Snare Cascades, Snare Falls, Snare Forks and Snare Rapids) with an installed capacity of 30.35 MW.
