Sneglehøj from Møn

The Sneglehøj on Møn is Keldby about three kilometers west of Stege on the island Moen in Denmark .

Explanation

The special thing about Sneglehøjen (Eng. Snail Hills ) is a processional path that spirals around the round hill to the top. Finds on such mounds mostly date from the Bronze Age and in Denmark are limited to Zealand (Sneglehøj from Gladsaxe, Sneglehøj from Kirke Sonnerup , Sneglehøj near Vordingborg -Liselund, Stolpegaard Major and Minor, two neighboring hills on Stolpegaardsvej in Copenhagen ) and the neighboring regions.

The burial mound is about 20 m in diameter and 4 m high. The trail is not associated with any ancient use of the hill and is considered an expression of romantic garden art over the past 150 years.

In 1875 an urn was found on the south side of the hill containing burned bones and a small gold-plated bronze knife.

This hill is shown on the new 500 kroner banknote.
