Stege [ steə ] is the capital of the Danish island of Møn and has 3786 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). Stege Sogn , the district of the town church, is one of the three parishes on Møn.
The three-aisled St. Hans Kirke goes back to a Romanesque building from the 12th century. 1460–1525 it was expanded in the Gothic style . The frescoes in the choir of the church are interesting .
The main shopping street in the city is Storegade ( German for "Great Street" ).
Tuesdays in July and the first Tuesday in August (2013 for the fortieth time) the Tuesday market ( Tirsdags Marked in Danish ) takes place, some of which is marketed under the name " Stege Festival ".
The city is connected to the Berlin-Copenhagen cycle route and the European EuroVelo cycle route 7.
history
The origin of the city was Stegehus Castle, built by the Danish King Waldemar I in 1175 .
Of the former city fortifications, only the mill gate ( Mølleporten ) at the northern exit of the city remains today. The moat by the gate was filled with water. In 1268, Stege received city rights .
At the end of the Middle Ages , Stege became wealthy by fishing for herring in the Baltic Sea around Møn, which supplied almost a third of all Danish needs.
In 1510 and 1522, Stege was attacked by Lübeck , but could not be captured thanks to its city fortifications.
