Snow ( FourCC :) SNOWis an experimental format for lossy compressed video data that has been developed by Michael Niedermayer ( FFmpeg project) since 2004 . The reference implementation is released as free software under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL). It can compress videos lossy as well as lossless. Snow implements wavelet compression with the aim of achieving good image quality at very low bit rates . After the Xiph Foundation's abandoned Tarkin experiment, Snow was the first free wavelet video format.

properties

Snow is comparable to wavelet- based formats like Tarkin and Dirac . A specialty of Snow is the use of an intelligent and very efficient version of the area coding . Compared to Dirac, it is less complex. This means that it can be processed in real time on significantly more systems and is therefore more suitable for everyday use.

The FFmpeg project aims to have this format standardized as an RFC by the IETF .
