Tarkin is an experimental format for lossy compressed video data from the Ogg format family of the Xiph.Org Foundation .
Development began in early 2000 and was discontinued in August 2002 in favor of the sister project Theora . The project was mainly carried out by Jack Moffitt, Christopher Montgomery and Rick Franchuk.
It was named after a character from Star Wars named Wilhuff Tarkin .
technology
Tarkin is based on three-dimensional wavelet compression . A video block has two spatial and one temporal dimensions , which are encoded as a unit with a three-dimensional discrete wavelet transformation . This creates a strong contrast to the traditional method used by most common formats - including Theora - in which a two-dimensional discrete cosine transformation is applied to the individual image and the changes and movements occurring between the images ( motion compensation ) are coded in a separate step become.
Tarkin has the FourCC trkn
. The reference implementation was developed in the C programming language and published as free software .
