Jean-Marc Valin is a developer of free multimedia software. He is a developer of important audio compression processes. Among other things, he is the creator of the widespread Speex, which specializes in speech signals, as well as the CELT process . CELT was incorporated into the new Internet standard Opus , of which Valin is also the main developer. He was and is involved in the development of various other multimedia formats at the Xiph.Org Foundation . He is also a member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society.

He studied at the Université de Sherbrooke in Québec , Canada, where he obtained his bachelor's degree in 1999, his master's degree in 2001 and finally his doctorate in electrical engineering in 2005 with a doctoral thesis on a system for auditory perception for a mobile robot. He worked for InfoSpace Speech Solutions (2001), for the ICT center of the Australian research agency “ CSIRO ” (2005–2008) and for Octasic Inc. (2008–2011) on speech communication and speech recognition systems. He began working on Speex in early 2002 with the help of David Rowe ( Codec2 ). At the end of July 2011, Jean-Marc Valin got a paid job for the development of Opus at Mozilla Corporation . A current project is the development of a free video compression format under the name " Daala ", which would be a free alternative to HEVC / H.265 . He currently lives in Canada with his children .
