Christopher "Monty" Montgomery (also known as "Monty" or "xiphmont"; * June 6, 1972 [?]) Is a developer of free multimedia software. He is a creator of the free Ogg - Container format and the audio codec Vorbis and the founder of Xiph.Org Foundation , which promotes the use of unlimited usable multimedia codecs.

He is a skilled multimedia programmer, a long-time supporter of the idea of free software, and a musician. Montgomery lives near Boston .

Montgomery studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and computer science . He also achieved the degree of Master of Engineering in technical informatics at the Tokyo Technical University (Tōkōdai, 東工大). In 1994 he founded what is now the Xiph.Org Foundation. In late 1994 he began working on cdparanoia . In 1998 he started working directly on Vorbis - as a further development of developments that he had made for his MIT student project. Until 2013 he worked on behalf of Red Hat on improving the Theora codec. He is also working (further) on a new audio codec.

In October 2013 he switched to Mozilla to work on a new video standard called " Daala ", which is said to be qualitatively superior to HEVC / H.265 .
