Principle of the upward slope

The term soaring ( soaring ”, but also “sailing, gliding”) describes in air sports the possibility of gaining height with a glider , hang-glider or paraglider in a slope updraft . In contrast to thermal flying , you do not need (direct) sunlight - as soon as a valley wind hits a steep slope or a sea wind hits a steep coast vertically , an updraft develops. The strength and size of the updraft depend on the wind strength and the shape of the terrain ( orography ).

Special avoidance rules apply to flights on slopes .
