The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) is a global not-for-profit organization with two full-time offices in Pensacola ( Florida ) and Brussels ( Belgium ). According to the Belgian legal form “VZW” ( vereniging zonder winstoogmerk ), SETAC Europe VZW is a non-profit organization.

history

With the establishment of SETAC in the United States in 1979, an interdisciplinary science forum was created. At that time the SETAC had 230 founding members. Over the years this has developed into an international organization that will have around 5,300 members in 2020. The SETAC brings together interdisciplinary biologists, chemists and toxicologists from over 90 countries. There are also researchers and developers from industry as well as environmental politicians.

SETAC is divided into independent regional units: SETAC Europe, SETAC North America, SETAC Latin America, SETAC Asia - Pacific and SETAC Africa (in formation). Further country- or region-specific sub-groups are organized within these units.

job

The members aim to promote "research, teaching and training in the fields of ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry" . The research of environmental pollutants and the management of natural resources are the central activities. Another focus is on the application of scientific findings and their implementation in environmental policy .

The overarching approach from science, industry and politics enables SETAC to implement scientific knowledge directly in legislative and industrial decisions. The SETAC uses global and regional conferences as an essential instrument, at which representatives of all disciplines are in dialogue with one another. Specifically, SETAC members are, for example, significantly involved in the implementation of the European chemicals directive ( REACH ) and the SEVESO directive .

Publications

  • SETAC has been publishing the journal " Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (ET&C)" since 1982 . Starting with an annual edition, it has been published monthly since 1986. The journal's topics include environmental toxicology, chemistry and their application in risk research.
  • In addition, SETAC has been publishing the magazine “Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management (IEAM)” since 2005. This publication closes the existing “gap between scientific research and its application in environmental policy”.
  • The German-speaking branch of the company has its own specialist journal, "Environmental Sciences Europe (ESEU)". German and English-language reports are published regularly. Original articles are also freely available ( Open Access ). ESEU emerged in 2011 from the German-language journal Environmental Sciences and Pollutant Research (UWSF).

Conferences

Each regional SETAC society organizes an annual scientific conference. The regional-specific subgroups do the same. Every four years the SETAC World Association organizes a "SETAC World Congress". At this congress, global and current environmental policy challenges are addressed in particular.

The last world congress took place from May 20 to 24, 2012 in Berlin under the motto: "Securing a sustainable future: Integrating science, policy and people". This year's discussion topics range from the problems of global drinking water supply to possible concrete recommendations for action on dealing with nature after the Fukushima nuclear disaster . Direct communication in lectures and working groups is essential for members who come from different areas of work and life. They are united by the goal of countering current environmental problems with concrete recommendations for action and legislative initiatives.
