The origins of the Society of the Helpers of Mary lie with the German nun Anna Huberta Roggendorf and her commitment in India. In 1927 she joined the Order of the Daughters of the Holy Cross and in 1934, almost two years after her arrival in India, she became the director of an orphanage for girls.

The St. Catherine's Home “was at the gates of Mumbai . With a few sisters and little financial means, Sr. Anna Huberta took in neglected children from the slums and adopted thousands of them over the years to give them legitimate status under the law. Over time, more and more young women wanted to follow Anna Huberta's example. That was the beginning of the Society of the Helpers of Mary.

On March 27, 1942, the Feast of Mary's Sorrows, the first eight helpers of Mary made the promise to devote their lives to serving the poor. In 1962, the group was so large that it was recognized as a pious association by Archbishop Gracias . In the same year, the helpers of Mary opened their first branch in Mumbai-Dharavi , the largest slum in Asia. They set up an ambulance here and began teaching neglected children. Further branches followed in and around Mumbai and other Indian states. With increasing work and separation from St. Catherine's Home, the helpers of Mary became more and more independent.

In 1984 the "Society of the Helpers of Mary" was recognized by Archbishop Pimenta as the diocesan congregation of the Archdiocese of Bombay . With the expansion of its work to Ethiopia , the Community of the Helpers of Mary was elevated to the status of a papal congregation on March 19, 2001. Sisters of the Congregation work in India , Ethiopia, Kenya and Italy to help the poor. They are supported by numerous associations.
