The Sodenberg Chapel

The Sodenberg Chapel is located on the Sodenberg , an elevation in the small town of Hammelburg in Lower Franconia in the Bad Kissingen district . The cross in the chapel is one of the Hammelburg monuments and is registered in the Bavarian list of monuments under the number D-6-72-127-201 .

history

The articulated, yellow sandstone cross trunk bears the year 1535 and a coat of arms with a double cross under the body. The crucifix was created at the instigation of Philipp von Thüngen and was possibly already the destination of pilgrimages during the peasant uprising of 1525 , which reached a climax in the second half of the 19th century. The Kreuzpflege Sodenberg raised money for needy families and localities.

The chapel stands on the edge of the crater on the Sodenberg and was built in 1892 as a protective roof for the cross.
