Soisalo is considered by the majority to be the largest island in Finland and the largest inland island in Europe . It is located in the Savo region and covers 1638 km².

An island is by definition one in a sea or inland waters , lying even at high tide over the water level protruding land mass that completely of water surrounded, but no continent is. In the case of Soisalo this is the case, Soisalo is surrounded by the lakes Kallavesi , Unnukka , Suvasvesi and Kermajärvi . In some cases, however, it is quite narrow, river-like waters, so that the status of Soisalos as an island is disputed according to different definitions of the term island.
